Time to Celebrate Jessica’s Graduation!

Award Ceremony on May 19th at Taylor Road MS

Today is a day of jubilation and reflection, as my sister Jessica steps onto the podium, proudly wearing her graduation gown from Taylor Road Middle School. Her journey through these transformative years has been a testament to resilience and personal growth. From grappling with the challenges of online schooling in the wake of the pandemic to forming steadfast study habits and earning awards of recognition, her story paints a brilliant picture of inspiring triumph over adversity.

 A Selfless Sacrifice:

The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic plunged the education system into the digital world, a transition that posed unique stumbling blocks for students with special needs, including those like Jessica on the autism spectrum. I vividly recall those early days when Jessica struggled to pay attention in online sessions or complete her schoolwork, even innocently wandering into the wrong virtual classrooms at times. Amid these hurdles, it was our mother's ceaseless dedication that became Jessica's beacon of hope. Choosing to put her career on pause, my mom devoted herself entirely to guiding Jessica through this uncharted territory. Her selfless decision was the key that unlocked Jessica's potential.

Navigating Unfamiliar Terrain:

As the clouds of the pandemic began to clear, Jessica transitioned back to in-person learning. While the large school environment and complex IEP schedule of general education, special education, and co-teaching initially appeared like an unsolved puzzle, Jessica, with the help of her teachers, slowly but surely started finding her way. The gentle and patient guidance from her mentors helped her cultivate study habits, hone her organizational skills, and instill a profound sense of responsibility towards her academic pursuits.

Celebrating Academic Success:

Jessica's tenacity and relentless drive resulted in several achievements throughout her middle school journey. A standout moment was when my mom received an email from Jessica’s school on May 3rd, inviting my parents to an honor award ceremony - an affirmation of Jessica's exponential growth. From struggling with language arts - a common challenge among autistic students - Jessica started diligently honing her writing skills. Her involvement in Special Olympics, Toastmasters, and a heart-warming program known as Open Arms, allowed her to connect with like-minded peers and empathetic volunteers. Moreover, her conversations with a high school volunteer significantly boosted her communication skills.

 Blossoming Social Skills:

Jessica's academic accomplishments aside, her growth in social skills has been nothing short of remarkable. Once a shy and nervous girl in social settings, Jessica embarked on a journey to discover the beauty of friendships. Through her interactions and involvement in various activities, she learned to read social cues, converse effectively, and cultivate meaningful friendships. On her last day of school, she and her school friend exchanged their parents’ phone numbers to stay in touch over the summer and in high school, a promising sign of her significant social progress. Not to mention, Jessica became aware of school fashion trends like North Face backpacks and lululemon clothing, which she never paid attention to before.

Embracing Life’s Joys:

Jessica's journey has taught us the power of embracing life's joys and making the most of what we have. Although she may not be the most intellectually gifted, Jessica's ability to find happiness, appreciate the small things, and bring joy to those around her is truly inspiring. Her infectious smile and positive attitude remind us of the beauty in simplicity and the importance of cherishing every moment.

A Celebration of Growth:

As Jessica steps across the graduation stage today, we're not just applauding her academic accomplishments. We're also celebrating the extraordinary growth she has exhibited through this crucial life chapter. Jessica’s journey serves as a reminder that success is not solely measured by results but by personal development, resilience, and the ability to find joy in every circumstance.

Looking to the Future:

As Jessica embarks on the next phase of her educational journey at Johns Creek High School, our family eagerly anticipates the possibilities that lie ahead. With her remarkable determination, the support of family and friends, and a community that values inclusivity, we believe that Jessica will continue to thrive and inspire others along the way.

Jessica will join me at Johns Creek High School next school year!
